Here’s how the Thirty-Day Book Writing Course works

This challenge is all about creating your first draft of your book, using your book outline from the five-day challenge to guide you.

Drafting means getting the gist of your material out of your head and down on paper as fast as possible, and not sweating over the small stuff getting stuck revising each sentence a million times.

Speed is of the essence here. Do not worry about ‘rushing it’. “Good enough” really is good enough at this stage. There are plenty more steps to come that ensure your wording spot on before the public see your book.

This is why I’ll show you to use the dictation method in the earliest stage of your book. It removes the temptation to tweak… I mean revise… no sorry edit… yeah edit… the words you just put down… erm… I mean wrote.

That urge to constantly revise and perfect as you go is the route to author disaster.

PS. If you find you still prefer to write or discover it’s easier to type the occasional point when you get tongue-tied, there’s advice on how to write clearly and concisely too.

Lesson 1: Boost your authority

This is a final quality check on your book outline before you start elaborating. You need to be certain that your book is going to enhance your professional credentials and that your book is also going to meet your readers’ needs before any painstaking work begins. There are three aspects to this.

  1. Boost your authority by adding an overview of you and how your book is guaranteed to meet your reader needs to your introduction (11mins)
  2. Review your placeholder front and back matter in your book, so your title has a traditionally published feel to it rather than something shoddy written by a clueless person who cut corners on the basics (15 mins)
  3. Finalise your book outline and double check all your ducks are in a row before you crack on  (8 mins)

Lesson 2: Get ready to write

To speed up the dictation process and make sure you’re backing up your work as you go, there’s some advice on the optimal set-up to make sure you avoid any bumps in the road and get off to a strong start.

  1. Set up voice recording and transcription by looking at the options and working out what’s the best method for you (6 mins)
  2. Make a test recording so you can get in your stride about verbalising your ideas and make sure you avoid the joyous sound of silence (4 mins)
  3. Set up backups so your research and your draft book progress is safely archived online should your computer hard disk have a meltdown or you have a sausage fingers moment and delete something important (3 mins)

Lesson 3: Finish your draft

It can’t be put off any longer – it’s time to write! :) Well, dictate. This lesson is all about how to explain your material quickly, clearly, concisely and completely. It’s important not to dwell on getting the first draft perfect, but these pointers on writing quality are helpful to know in advance because if you bear this advice in mind, it will cut down on the number tweaks needed when you get to the editing stage.

  1. Learn to dictate your book in the optimal sequence to complete your draft as quickly as possible, plus some advice on what to do should you get tongue-tied (6 mins)
  2. Make your book an easy read with some written English tips anyone can apply even if you’re on the run from the Grammar Police (8 mins)
  3. Avoid bad habits, like talking about yourself too much when you elaborate to make your book a more enjoyable read for your audience (6 mins)
  4. Create your first draft in double quick time by adding your transcription text back into your book template (6 mins)
  5. Finish your introductions and summaries, which is most easily done as a review of the main body of each chapter once complete (2 mins)

Lesson 4: Resolve the loose ends

As you go through your draft, you will run into loose ends, like artwork you need, or resource ideas that need tightening up, and of course settling on the perfect title and subtitle. This lesson explains how to resolve those loose ends.

  1. Add your interior artwork by picking the right image type and making sure the quality is sufficient (8 mins)
  2. Plan your book resources by reviewing some suggestions for different types of file to add if you’re creating something from scratch (11 mins)
  3. Plan your book title and subtitle with some tried and tested suggestions to play around with and mould to your needs (11 mins)

Important stuff to ponder

  1. You need to be able to focus on this for 30 days… not every day… but no drifting and excuses
  2. It takes around six to ten hours to complete the five-day challenge and plan your book outline (if you’ve not done yours yet)
  3. Dictating your book takes around eight to 12 hours plus breaks and there’s a bit of prep and thinking but nothing too onerous.
  4. There is no 4.
