Do you want your book to look fantastic?

I wanted to show you something that I’ve been working on behind the scenes here at Let’s Tell Your Story publishing. What I’ve been slaving away at is book cover templates for business book authors.

So often you see cover templates, and there’s a Viking soldier with a sword or there’s a lady who’s being swept off her feet by some romantic hero, which is lovely, but it’s no good at all for business book templates! “So what are we going to do,” I thought.

Not everyone can afford to go to a designer and have something done from scratch because there’s a lot of to-ing and fro-ing and concepts and discussing the idea. It’s quite woolly sometimes doing a cover. And it can involve a lot of “person-hours” to get it done, which, of course, makes expensive. And because it’s expensive, people can’t afford to have a good cover for their book. And I think if you’ve slaved away, and you’ve gone to the time of trouble, and effort to share your expertise to help other people, then ….please… let’s make it look good. You know, let’s make sure you get the credit and the recognition that you deserve for sharing what you know.

So, I put together these templates and there’s a couple of styles.

Text-based designs

One style is more I’ve called a text-based cover where there’s a little bit of illustration, possibly, or not at all. It’s very simple, but it’s very effective for business books, I think. And then I’ve also done another style, which is more photograph based, where the photograph is the most striking thing of the book. And it helps to suggest a lot about the mood and the content of what’s being written. But of course, those are a lot more and specific to particular niches. So, you couldn’t have, you know, something to do with marketing necessarily, or something to do with the flower arranging business or something like that, it’s not going to work very well sometimes.

But you can always swap the photo for something that works for you. I think you’ve got the ability to do that if you want.

There are some great places where you can get really affordable photos and come up with a great cover. So that’s what I’ve put together. There are these two styles. They’re in Photoshop.

I’m in the process of testing to see if you can edit them with a free tool called GIMP because Photoshop used to have to buy as a really expensive license with several hundred pounds worth of software. I know you can get it for $10 a month but what I’m hoping is you can get something like this you can take it to somebody on Fiverr or a friend who has some graphic design ability and they can just quickly do an update for you, so whatever your budget is, whatever tools you’ve got, you’re going to be able to put your text on and make your cover.

If you need this help, then I’ve got something for you that it’s the price of a couple of takeaway meals.

Photo-based designs

I’m adding more to them as we go. It’s just going to be a case of finding something that’s going to work for your book.

A book is judged by its cover and you are judged by your book and I don’t want to see anybody getting written off or put on the scrap heap just because their cover looked a bit naff and a bit home rolled.

So that’s it. I just wanted to show you what I’ve been doing here. And if you’re interested or you have any questions about covers, let me know.

I’m going to do a few blog posts on how to choose a good cover, discuss the sort of mistakes that people often make to make sure that even if you don’t use anything that I can help you with at least you can get a really good cover for your book.
